Dental Implant Information

How painful is the dental implant procedure?

For many patients, there is a certain fear associated with going to the dentist, which most often stems from the pain associated with various dental procedures. Dental implants are no exception, which is why many potential patients inquire as to how painful the dental implant procedure is prior to undergoing the treatment.

All dental implant procedures, as with any other oral surgical procedure, have some associated pain. However, many implant patients found themselves surprised at how minimal the pain and discomfort of their procedure actually is, especially considering most implant treatments only require a local anesthetic. The pain associated will ultimately depend on which type of implant treatment you undergo.

Dental Implant treatments. Traditional dental implant treatments are most often performed using a local anesthetic, but some patients will require a general anesthetic. Traditional implants are larger in size, therefore a larger hole will be drilled into the jawbone in order to properly secure the implant. This procedure is a bit more invasive, and may require stitches. Following the treatment there is some pain and swelling associated, and patients are given a prescription for pain medication if need be.

Mini dental implant treatments. Mini implants are smaller than their traditional counterparts, therefore treatments are less invasive, require no downtime and only involve minimal pain. A local anesthetic will be used prior to treatment in order to numb the area being treated. This minimally invasive treatment involves only small holes being drilled in the jawbone, therefore it does not require stitches and no downtime is necessary—patients can use their teeth immediately following treatment. Patients rarely find themselves in pain following the mini implant treatment, but if they do, their dentist can prescribe pain medication.

Whether undergoing traditional or mini dental implant treatments, once the implants are placed, your new teeth are fixed to the implants, and rest comfortably on your gums, thus avoiding aggravation to the surgical site. This means less pain than other tooth replacement treatment approaches, and shorter duration of discomfort overall. Do not let the potential pain associated with treatment stop you from undergoing dental implantation. Discuss all of your concerns with you dentist, and see how easy it can be to replace your teeth for a beautiful smile.
