How many dental implants will I need?

Dental implants are an innovative way for adult men and women to replace broken, damaged or missing teeth with stable, long lasting results. When potential patients are first considering dental implants, the question that often arises is: how many dental implants will I need? The answer to that question will vary for each patient depending on several factors:

Number of teeth being replaced. One of the most common factors that will determine how many implants are needed will be the number of teeth you are having replaced. A single tooth replacement will require a single implant, a group of teeth may require more, and an entire bridge of teeth, still more. Depending on certain individual factors, your dentist will determine how many implants are needed to provide stable support for your replacement teeth.

Bone depth and density. One of those individual factors that your dentist will assess is the amount of bone you have present in the jaw. Depth and density of bone will be one of the deciding factors in how many implants you’ll need. In order to be successful, implants require a certain amount of surrounding bone for stabilization. Today, implants come in a variety of sizes to accommodate varying jawbones.

If your dentist is limited in regards to implant length, meaning bone depth is limited, more implants will be needed for proper stabilization. The length if the implants will ultimately be determined by how much bone you have present. The more secure each individual implant can be, the less you’ll need overall.

Implant Failure. Your dentist will assess your case thoroughly before determining whether you are a good candidate for dental implants, but even ideal candidates can experience implant failure—something that occurs for a variety of reasons. When receiving several implants—in situations such as replacing a full arch of teeth—a good consideration is to have enough implants so that if one implant fails, there are enough left to prevent the failure of your whole implant reconstruction.

Each case varies regarding how many implants are needed, therefore if you are considering dental implants, consult with your dentist in order to determine how many implants you’ll need to perfect your smile.
