Am I too old for dental implants?

Age can be a factor when it comes to almost any medical or dental procedure, and dental implants are no exception. Tooth loss is a natural occurrence for many individuals as they age, but patients often wonder if there is an age limit when it comes to dental implants. While it is possible to be too young for dental implants, old age itself does not appear to be a factor for implant success. However, there are other factors associated with old age that may inhibit patients from undergoing the procedure.

Your overall oral health will play a large role in whether or not you are a proper candidate for dental implants. During your initial consultation your dentist will assess several factors relating to your oral health:

- Gum Disease: If you show signs of gum disease, your dentist will want to treat it before starting the implant treatments. Gum disease can negatively affect the healing process that needs to occur following implant placement. If your implants do not heal properly, they won’t stabilize. This can lead to implant failure.

- Surrounding Teeth: The health of your surrounding teeth will also be assessed. If you currently suffer with multiple broken, damaged or decayed teeth, your dentist will recommend treating these as well. While dental implants do not rely on surrounding structures for support, the health of surrounding teeth can affect the long-term implant results. Your dentist will want to give you the best chance for success.

- Maintenance: Your dentist will also ask you about your oral health maintenance. Dental implants require patients to be diligent with their post treatment care and old habits die hard. Proper candidates will brush twice daily, floss and visit their dentist for regular teeth cleanings.

In addition to oral health, there are also general medical health conditions that can affect dental implant success as well. There are a number of medical conditions that can preclude treatment. Because of this, your dentist may also require a general health history, blood tests, a physical or cardiograms before starting treatment. A release from your medical doctor may also be required.
