Can dental implants be placed in a single day?

When dental implant treatments were first introduced to patients, the treatments were invasive, required downtime and often took months to complete. Advancements in dental technology have brought about faster, less invasive treatments that now allow patients to see results faster—sometimes even in a single day. Learn about the different types of dental implants and see which is right for you.

Traditional dental implants have been available to patients for years. This treatment is considered to be invasive, as it requires stitches following treatment, patient downtime, and can take as may as nine months or more to complete. While this treatment is not ideal for many patients, sometimes it is the best option for those looking for long-term implant success.

Another option is mini dental implants. Mini dental implants, or MDIs, are a faster, less-invasive form of dental implantation that can help patients to achieve a naturally beautiful smile—often in just a single day. Most MDI patients are qualified to arrive for surgery, have their implants placed, their replacement teeth fitted, and a temporary prosthetic placed all on the same day.

With one day dental implants, also known as immediate load implants, it is now possible to walk away with a temporary crown firmly in place on the same day mini dental implant has been implanted into your jaw. The procedure will begin with the administration of a local anesthetic, after which your dentist will uses a specialized series of drills to create a hole in your jawbone for implant placement. The MDI will then be placed using a specialized wrench until only the head, or abutment, of the implant is visible above the gum line.

At this time, patients will be fitted for their replacement tooth or teeth. Then, a temporary prosthetic, often a crown, will be attached, giving patients immediate use of their new implants. Within one month of the original treatment, the permanent prosthetic can be fixed into place, completing the implant process.

There are a few dental and medical conditions that may make one day implants unrealistic, so your options will be discussed thoroughly before treatment begins However, the success rate of one day dental implants is similar to that of the more invasive process—giving patients a naturally beautiful smile with stable, long-lasting results.
